Cyprus History

The history of Cyprus spans many thousands of years. Evidence exists of human settlement on Cyprus from as early as the tenth millenium BC - some twelve thousand years ago. It is said that these early humans on the island of Cyprus co-existed with dwarf elephants, whose archaeological remains have been found on the island.

Since those early days of human settlement in Cyprus, the island has been home to many races of peoples including Assyrians, Hittites, Ancient Greeks, Mycenean Greeks, Ancient Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, British, Turkish and Modern Greek people.

Aphrodite

Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty was said to have been born in the foam of the sea near Paphos in Southern Cyprus.

This statue of Aphrodite, The Aphrodite of Soli, or Soloi, dates from approximately 100BC and is most likely of Roman origin. The Aphrodite statue is currently held in the Archeological Museum, Nicosia, Cyprus.

Saint Hilarion Castle

Saint Hilarion Castle is near the town of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus in the mountain range above the town. The castle was originally founded as a monastery by the monk who gave St. Hilarion Castle its name.
