Cyprus Unification

The Unification of Cyprus today (Jan 2010) seems as far away as it ever did in the past thirty years. Talks continue between The Republic of Cyprus and the TRNC and also between Greece and Turkey. Of course the United Nations are involved and the International community including the European Economic Union and America all have something to add to the discussions and the pressure for a solution.

Turkey, of course, is in an untenable position with outstanding United Nations resolutions against it to withdraw troops, legal judgements in Cyprus, the UK and the European Court of Human Rights against the illegal issue and occupation of land belonging to Greek Cypriots, and now the North of the Island is in the European Union but beyond the reach of EEC law due to Turkish troops. On the other hand, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the TRNC, is a de facto sovereign state with its security clearly guaranteed by Turkey. Will it be another thirty years before the world recognises the TRNC? More questions than answers here.

Cyprus Peacekeeping

The duties of Cyprus Peacekeeping have fallen the the United Nations which maintains and controls a buffer zone dividing the Republic of Cyprus from the TRNC. The UN Cyprus peacekeeping buffer zone extends right across the width of Cyprus passing through, and divides the capital city, Nicosia. The buffer zone is no man's land Cyprus - it is here that nothing changes and no-one goes. Peacekeeping in the current political climate in Cyprus involves nothing more than patrolling the border and monitoring crossing points, and also, of course maintaining a visible UN troop prescence.
